Happy
My sincere thanks to everyone who assisted me with 'Happy' in Critique.
Qolweni developed as an informal settlement over the last 15 or so years, and is at present undergoing redevelopment, where the informal and squatter housing is being replaced by low cost RDP houses.
This image was taken at the house of Asher, someone that I befriended recently, and who introduced me to this community. This room functions as his shop, from which he sells some DVD's, video's and mainly vegetables. The customers buy their goods through the serving hatch, which is the light area on the right. This photograph was not planned - I happen to see them in this arrangement when I walked up to this window, and tried to capture this before they could loose their spontaneity.
The main suggestions that came from the Critique was to lighten the inside of the room and to loose a bit of light from that bright serving hatch, which I did. I retained the original crop, but also tried to put a bit more separation between the children. I personally feel that this reworked image delivers better environmental value than the original, mainly because there is more visible in the background now.
At Home
I took this picture in the informal settlement of Qolweni on the outskirts of Plettenberg Bay. By informal that suggests that these are essentially what is commonly referred to as squatter areas. After the restriction on free movement of non-Whites in South Africa was lifted at the end of Apartheid, there was a huge influx of people into more developed and commercially active areas from what the previous regime called 'Homelands' . In essence these Homelands were designated areas in SA which were given autonomy and 'independence' - essentially a move by the previous era governments to appease the black population, and thus keep a lid on a simmering and unjust situation.
Just like Qolweni there are tens, maybe hundreds of similar settlements - all being rebuilt to make the lives of these settlers better. This is where a large portion of SA 's money is now going - getting the essential infrastructure and utilities into places like this.
On my walk through Qolweni I came across this house with this lady and this boy.
She (Frieda) allowed me to go into the main bedroom, which you can see over here. The cladding on the inside of the wall is cardboard, which is for some a favourite item that helps with isolation from the cold (apart from also having really wicked abilities to deafen sound like one experiences in a sound laboratory)
I asked the little boy to join in after I took some portraits of Frieda on her bed. His inclusion completed the composition for me, and in some ways took over as the focal element here.
In editing I wanted to reinforce the natural light to fade from left to right - I really wanted to bring the little bits on the table into the frame, and wished for those personal belongings to tell us a bit about Frieda and what she holds dear.
Contemplating You
I photographed Lena where she is sitting on the ground immediately ouside the front door of her house. Dalina, her mom,Here the late afternoon light and gentle breeze assisted me.

Vincent the Umkhwetha: The Making of a Man
In his book 'Long Walk to Freedom', Nelson Mandela comments on how a Xhosa man who has not been circumcised is a paradox, because he is still viewed as a boy.
My own memory of this image was very special. I was traveling back from Knysna, the next coastal town down the N2, and saw this young man in the bushes as I was approaching Plettenberg Bay. The Mkwetha needs to stay away from all during this fortnight of initiation, so I was a bit hesitant to approach. However, my curiosity and wish to meet him, and photograph him, became the better, and I turned in at the township of Kwanekothule, struck up a conversation with a boy of about 18 (John Godoma who works for the local newspaper The Bitou News), and told him that I wanted to go and meet (and photograph) this man painted white with this compound made from Ifuta (white stone)
Let me state that the Mkwetha is not something unfamiliar to me. They have been part of my life since I can remember. Ever-present in any green fields outside the perimeter of any Eastern Cape city or town. When I played golf as a teenager, they will emerge from the bush trying to sell golf balls that they picked up, and volunteer to be a caddy. However, if there was a female present in our party, they will not show face, as any contact with females are prohibited during this period of attaining manhood. This ritual comes down the ages, and is performed by the elders. The wound are wrapped in medicinal leaves, and the ritual usually takes about two - four weeks to be completed.
This is Vincent Mlinjana, aged 17, who lives in Knysna, and in his final year at high school. He had some fellow Xhosa boys sharing his experience and camping out with him, but when I visited, they had already left. Their transformation was done, and they had re-integrated back into their soceity, albeit as men.
I saw the burnt-out patches of where their lean-to's were - they have to burn everything that sustained them for the two weeks. Shelter, cooking utensils, bedding - everything. The are many strict rules that govern this period of separation and the diet to be adhered to - too many to write down here.
It is also demanded that they are welcomed back into the society with a bang Huge party, and the slaughter of some animal, and the words of some elder to proclaim them as wholesome and a man.
What is so special about this for me is that my house is a mere 10 km down the road, where I relax with broadband, can do online shopping, and insist on Balsamic vinegar on my salad leaves.
Yet 10 km before that place that I call my house, I can turn off the road and be transported into something so distant, so honest and so African, and so enriching.
When I spoke to Vincent he was awaiting word back from the college in Knysna where he applied for training as an IT specialist. I have lost contact with him; however, within the next few weeks I shall be traveling down there and I have promised myself that I shall re-establish contact with him, hear how his studies are going, and hand him some prints.
Hopefully I shall be able to post again here to tell you how Vincent is, and I shall ask him how he reflects on this Mkwetha time of his.
Unyielding Love Abiding Sorrow
Werner Gysman was affected during birth, and has been cared for by his mother (Doreen) and extended family ever since. My short photo visit to this family was one of the most heart-warming and positive experiences I can remember.

At Your Service
Taken on the ONEXPOSURE walkabout through Amsterdam last Saturday.
A special thanks to Mr. Alexander Ingen, the bartender at De Ooievaar bar,
who kindly moved his customers aside for this capture.
Just like Me
The little one's name is Pumeza. She is 2 yrs old, and according to her dad Billy, she is very intelligent, confident, and 'knows everything and everybody' in the street. He quite noticably beams with pride when he speaks about her, and having taken pictures of her this day, I have to agree that she is a delight to work with. Just like putty - ask her to stand in a particular way and keep very still, and she simply does it. No probs.
She is sitting here on the family sofa with her auntie Janene, who is 18, and who sports a similar hairstyle. Apparently Pumeza copied Janene with this.
This community of Green Valley, also called Wittedrift, is about 10km from my house in Plettenberg Bay, but feels like a world apart.
Green Valley is quite an insular community, and the people here have essentially become one huge circle of friends and family. They are not keen on 'inkomers' / new settlers, and maintain that this keeps the village 'clean', with the result that crime and drug use is just about non-existent in this place.
They are also quite conservative in their outlook, and religion plays a big part of their lives.
This is the 1st time I have managed to get a publication on the people this particular village, so I am very chuffed about this one!
Consolation
Photography is an elegiac art, a twilight art. Most subjects photographed are, just by virtue of being photographed, touched with pathos. All photographs are 'memento mori'. To take a photograph is to participate in another person's mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time's relentless melt.

About me
"To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place... I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them." -Elliott Erwitt.
I wish that I had more time to devote to photography. However, when I get that chance, the sheer enjoyment of it always makes up for those weeks of waiting.
My preference has evolved from experimental to street, and finally to people.
In people photography I have found what I need, and so far it has been a very interesting journey.
I joined this site a few years ago after I read Tom Hoop's comments about 1x in a UK photography magazine. Needless to say - it was probably the best investment that I could have made as far as understanding of what an image is about.
My preference for B&W derives from my days in the dark room, which started when I was about twelve. I once won a Jobo colour kit in a photography competition at school, but asked for the money instead in order to buy a new monochrome enlarger and lens..
When it comes to photography I see in shades of grey, and I cannot see this changing soon. I am sure that my choice of subject matter has evolved in parallel with this realisation.
I am passionate about the various people of that continent that I belong to, and in bringing pictures of ordinary folk in their ordinary houses to this forum I have started to appreciate how powerful a medium photography actually is, and the responsibility that accompanies this.

Rue des Rosiers
This is the steet of flowers, in the Marais district of Paris, and which today symbolises the Jewish community in this city. When they where expelled from Paris over 600 years ago, this is where they settled, which was at that time outside the boundary of Paris.
The area has become very diverse now, through immigration from North Africa and Eastern Europe.
Some sections of Marais are very pleasant to stroll through, with trendy shops and cutting edge designs peering out of these medieval looking shopfronts.
I needed to get this lady with her buggy in front of one of the pillars to avoid her losing impact against the backdrop, and was lucky on my second attempt, as I waited for her to walk back from the grocery store.

Togetherness
The Living Room
I took this photograph of Chantal Watson (Willy's daughter) and Adean Moses in the lounge of the house belonging to Willy Watson, the flower seller, who has featured in a published photo of mine.
Unfortunately this room was without any windows, and far too dark to shoot in available light. On realising this, Willy promptly removed a piece of corrugated iron from one wall, which resulted in this shaft of light penetrating the darkness. I am sure that this must be their makeshift window (apparently the one wall of his house collapsed during some heavy rains last year, and I think that the corrugated iron structure is only temporary).
This shaft of light lit up only part of the room, and left the upper and lower sections very dark. The first submission was rejected, and I had to do a fair amout of PP to correct this imbalance in light. Luckily the reflection on the floor from the mirror in the background assisted to add some perspective and proportion. I do not think that this would have worked without the benefit of this reflection.
I am very grateful to those members who helped with the Critique of this image.

About me
NEWS: Nominated for Hasselblad Master 2010 in category Up and Coming
10-11-12 june 2011: photoworkshop " Creating Story telling Pictures" with Daria Endresen and Peter Kemp in Norway
Coming from Holland I like to do story telling pictures in a vintage atmosphere. I try to create some mystery into my pics. My scenes focus on detail. But a deep and longer look might open the door to another journey.
Well ...anyway all is thought of long before the camera clicks.
With respect I enjoy photowork from photographers like DeLone (... he = amazing), Barbara Taurua (so devine and classy nudes), Bread and Shutter ( inventive an creative work), Sauco ( unbelievable) are top of the bill to me.
And dont forget the creative Miss Daria Endresen.
Watch all their galleries here at 1x_com ...take a minute .... respect to all of them!!!!

About me
I am a photographer from the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I specialize in high impact portrait photography. I always try to tell a story with each image I create. The creative process for me usually begins with a specific idea in mind. However, I remain flexible, and have often detoured from my original plan. I try to learn the emotions, thoughts, and personality of each new subject. Making a connection with the subject and providing a comfortable experience is most important. I like to be unique with my ideas.
