Fuji has again scored a first with its sleek new GA645, the world's first autofocus medium-format camera. This fully electronic 6x4.5cm model also offers programmed aperture-priority and manual exposure modes, built-in flash, data recording, power film transport and a host of other smart features. The camera produces negatives and transparencies almost three times the size of a 35mm frame, yet is lightweight and compact enough to fit easily into a coat pocket.

Although a larger original yields better overall quality at significant enlargement, many photographers overlook this advantage in small prints, like a machine 4R, where the negative need only be enlarged approximately 2.5x rather than the 4x needed for 35mm. The 6x4.5cm neg fits 8x10 with little cropping, and the visual richness of a projected medium-format slide catches the eye of even seasoned photo buyers. And, with the 30-exposure capacity of 220 film, the GA645 matches the firepower of 35mm.

The system runs from two 3-volt lithium ion batteries said to be good for 3,000 exposures without flash, or 600 at 50 percent flash usage. Power condition is continuously monitored and displayed through an icon in the LCD panel described below. An "odometer" shows the total shots taken, in multiples of 100, for maintenance sche※※※※ng.

The electronics showed no lag in performance, and the fairly rapid motorized film advance produced no static markings in my tests down to 25 degrees F.

Most settings are made using the Up/Down dial and LCD display on the top right of the body. Although the panel can show 14 separate values, readability is maintained by having only those pertinent visible at any one time. All settings are instantly accessible by manipulating the Up/Down dial (or the Selector dial on the back) and one of the four soft-touch buttons. LEDs in the viewfinder display duplicate exposure data so that the camera need not be taken down from the eye. The minimal controls, smart visual array and excellent ergonomic design make the GA645 as fast and easy to operate as any 35mm point-and-shoot.

To load, turn the Selector to P, A or M, open the back, slide the pressure plate to its 120 or 220 position, and snap the spool hubs down. Insert the supply and take-up spools, but thread only the tip of the paper leader onto the latter. With the back open, the detented Up/Down dial switches to a winding control that moves the take-up spool in 1/12-turn increments. Press the hubs in, wind until the leader is taut, and close the back. Unlike manual systems in which the leader arrow must be aligned with a start mark, a sensor stops the moving film at frame one.

Set the film speed by placing the Selector in its ISO position and turning the Up/Down dial to scroll through the 25-1,600 range in 1/3 EV steps. Set the same dial to P (programmed auto) to pop out the retracted lens, and initiate electronically balanced aperture and shutter settings. Combined with autofocus, this is the fastest mode, and yields remarkably accurate exposures in most situations.

As the center-weighted, silicon photo diode of the GA645 meters through the viewfinder in all modes, be sure to use the built-in exposure compensation feature to adjust for filter factors.

The A (aperture-priority auto) setting lets you select the desired aperture with the Up/Down dial. half-stop numerical values read out in the finder and LCD, such as f/9.5 rather than a potentially confusing f/8-, along with the corresponding correct shutter speed. Arrows next to it indicate that the selected aperture is in range for the ISO and light level when both are off, or that a smaller or larger aperture is needed when the up or down arrows light, respectively. The upper shutter speed limit is 1/400 second from f/4 to f/9.5, and 1/700 second from f/11 to f/22.

Manual mode allows independent adjustment of both controls. Set the shutter by pressing and holding the exposure-compensation button, which also bears a small Time Value (TV) label, and turn the Up/Down dial until the desired speed, in numeric half steps, appears in the viewfinder or LCD. Release the button and the Up/Down action shifts to 1/2-stop increment aperture adjustment. Although exposure compensation is disabled in manual, its function can be duplicated by skewing the ISO setting as necessary. The lighting of both over/underexposure arrows in the finder indicates correct exposure.

The autofocus system switches automatically between passive (phase differential detection) and active (IR beam distance measurement) depending upon subject distance, contrast and illumination level. Simply position the autofocus reticle in the viewfinder over the critical portion of the subject, and depress the shutter release halfway to move the lens to one of its 870 steps.

To focus manually, toggle to manual by pressing the AF button (to display a blinking MF in the panel), press and hold the MF button beneath the lens barrel and turn the Up/Down dial until the required distance appears. In meters, selections are 0.7 to 1.2 in 0.1-meter increments, 1.5, 1.7, 2, 2.5, 3, 5, 10 and infinity, or if the display is toggled to feet by manipulating the Selector and AF button, 2.3, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 15 and 30, plus infinity. Pressing the AF button without moving the Selector resumes autofocus.

The uncluttered viewfinder is large, bright and parallax-corrected. Fixed yellow lines define the right and bottom of the subject, while the left and top lines expand or contract to show correct framing at all distances. The autofocus reticle remains centered in the window regardless of distance. Settings displayed beneath the image viewing area are aperture, over/underexposure arrows, shutter speed, flash icon/ready light (if the built-in flash is on) and focused distance. Although the LED display is limited to one of the above meter or feet settings, the lens moves to the exact subject distance in autofocus mode.

A button on the back of the body raises the built-in flash, which fires at the necessary power level to supplement existing light beyond f/4 and 1/30 second in programmed auto, at the necessary level for the selected aperture in aperture-priority (the shutter speed automatically adjusting to subject brightness), and at full power (the aperture and shutter speed remaining as set) Minimum flash distance is 2.3 feet.

A standard hot accessory shoe accepts external manual or autoflash units, but select yours with care. The 6x4.5cm image, made vertically on the film when the camera is held in its horizontal position, may not be evenly exposed in the corners by the normally horizontal beam pattern of many on-camera flash units. If possible, switch to a zoom or wide-angle reflector, use the auto mode of the flash and the manual mode of the GA645, and be sure to take some test shots before an important job.

The data feature records the date (year, month, day); time (day, hour, minute); exposure data (mode, aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation factor); date and exposure data, or date and time. For example, '95 7 1 P F 4 1/125 +0.5 EV tells that the image was made on July 1, 1995, in program mode, f/4 at 1/125 second with plus 1/2-stop compensation.

Start by setting the date and time with a combined action of the Selector, Data and AF button, then press the Data button alone to scroll through the options, shown in condensed format in the LCD. The imprint is legible and well outside of the image area.

Other features include an auto-canceling 10-second self-timer, switchable sounder (beeping once when the shutter fires, three times at the next-to-last frame), recessed baseplate button for advancing a partial roll to the end, 1/4x20 tripod socket, comfortable, end-mounted neck strap lugs and mechanical cable-release socket. Absent is a conventional flash connector, but one can be easily created by adding an inexpensive PC adapter to the hot shoe.

Nevertheless, the technologically advanced GA645 remains one of the most intelligently designed products I have reviewed in a long time. I admit initial skepticism about the usefulness of an auto-everything medium-format camera, but after only a week of use, I came to understand, and then appreciate, its electronic features. As this new offering from Fuji will undoubtedly find its way into the shoulder bag of many working photographers, the Professional designation is quite appropriate.

拥有了二年多了，最近才拿出来用，用正片拍了十来卷，很少扫描，感觉是台非常方便又好用的中幅相机，镜头表现也不错，值得拥有。
这两张是第二卷中的其中两张，随便找了家照相馆扫描，描得奇差，之后的就再没敢拿到外面扫了，凑合着上两张，加入组织。
